Supanova... Day 3

I am actually tired, this morning, perhaps because I was in a room party until all hours  (about 2 am, I think) drinking a particularly cheeky chardonnay with the boys from Cool Shite Productions, Joffrey Street and Madman Entertainment, and then I got up again before dawn. It's weird here... I didn't actually mean to get up before dawn, it's just dawn seems to happen hours after it does at home, and I was, well, awake...

By the way... there is not a card reader in the land that will let me download the photos I took at Supanova. I now have to find a Kodak shop tomorrow so I can get a cable orthe shop to burn the photos to CD via a docking station. Not feeling the love for Kodak, at the moment, I have to say.

I am feeling guilty however, so I've spent the day writing. I have relocated to Thridborn's house for a few days before we take off for Brisbane and to the whole Supanova thing, all over again. Having dinner with the gang again tonight, (I believe all the Americans want burgers... sheez... we're in the city that has Lygon Street and all its fabulous restaurants and they want burgers...). In the meantime, I will keep working, because that way I stop thinking about that (@)(Q*#)@ camera!

Supanova... Day 2

Well... this morning I was one of the few guests who wasn't hungover (can't handle their Jelly Donuts, these young 'uns). Still, we all soldiered on with our panels and whatever. I had a blast on my talk which was early in the day and then I spent the rest of the day on the stand talking to fans, signing books and chatting with Marianne de Pierres.

I did do some shopping (I know... who'd think... me... shopping... ) and bought Dace the entire set of Astromech Droids. I actually wanted to buy him the blow up Dalek from the Dr Who Fan Club over the way but they only had the one and wouldn't let me have it. Bought the Dalek Cookie Jar for Thirdborn and ADIL (Awesome Daughter-In-Law) instead.

Highlights of the day included Spike Spencer (Evangelion, Battle Angel, Orphen, Mar) singing Pass the Dutchie on the Playstation 3 Stand in Cartman's from Southpark's voice. Then there was Michael Winslow's brilliant Karaoke version of Bono. And James Kyson Lee from Heros doing an awesome Karaoke Duet with anime star, Monica Rial.

The group photo was fun, and as soon as I get my copy I'll post that too. I need to find a cable for the camera before I can put up the other photos. So frustrating...

An interesting aside... I said to my son before I left Alice, Son, if you guys want to see me over the weekend, you're going to have to volunteer to work at the con.

So they did. On Friday night everyone was saying to my son, "Wow... you're Jennifer Fallon's son? Cool?"

By the end of the con, they were saying to me: "Wow! You're David's mother? Cool!"

He's not Dace's hero for nothing, you know:)

  • had my photo taken with 2 storm troopers from Starwars
  • had John Rhys Davies spruiking books for me and Marianne de Pierres on our stand
  • paid $75 for a Transformers hoodie becasue it's freezing and I didn't bring a coat to Melbourne
  • been tickled by John Rhys Davies
  • been interviewed by 2 newspapers and filmed an intro spot for the Sci Fi Channel
  • Stood in a wrestling ring with John Rhys Davies after being announced by the wrestling announcer as if we were about to have a match
  • had John Rhys Davies read the 1st chapter of The Immortal Prince to a crowd of over a thousand people... (he was awesome, in case you're wondering..hehehe)
And discovered the Incredible Hulk (Lou Feringo) does actually fit in the front seat of my son's car  - a Daihatsu Sirion... just:)

I do have photos... I just can't get the camera and the computer talking.... grrrrr

Supanova and an EBA (Erratic Blogging Alert!)

I am sitting here waiting for the Tablet PC to charge up so I can pack it for the airport. Today I leave for Melbourne and the fabulous fun that is Supanova.

I will be blogging over the weekend, both here and on the Voyager  Online blog (because I have like, soooo much spare time), but I am also working like a dog the whole weekend - if you can call schmoozing with TV stars of my fave shows, talking to fans, signing autographs, drinking vast quantities of Southern Comfort and Diet Coke mineral water, giving talks and generally have a blast actual work...

Anyway, you should come along and join the fun if you're in Melbourne. If not, I will endeavour to keep you up to date with what's happening. This Supanova is going to be particularly fun becasue Thirdborn and his lovely wife, ADIL (Awesome Daughter-In-Law), have volunteered and will be working at the con. ADIL is running the Green Room, Thirdborn (being the uncle and mentor of Dace) is probably angling for a way to run the whole damned con:)

Thursday's Movie Review - Breach

I reviewed a DVD this time because the Alice Springs Cinema is having a bit of a slow week so it was this or Horton Hears a Who.

Here's the review for Breach...

In December 2000, the FBI paid a Russian agent $7 million for the KGB's file on an American mole - known to the KGB at the time only as Ramon Garcia. The file included a note of the mole about "purple-pissing Japanese" and Robert Hanssen, who was fond of the saying, became the prime suspect in the investigation.

In February, 2001, the FBI arrested the 25 year veteran, considered the "the worst spy in history" with a career as a double agent that is estimated to have cost countless lives and secrets, and which to this day, the full extent of the damage, is not entirely known. Based on fact, Breach picks up in the last two months of the investigation against Hanssen, when rookie and wannabe Special Agent, Eric O’Neill (Ryan Phillipe), a computer specialist bucking for promotion, is appointed as Hanssen’s clerk in a division set up purely trap the master spy. The FBI had to catch him red-handed, because all the evidence they had on him (in the Russian file) was inadmissible in court.

Recruited for the job by FBI Special Agent, Kate Burroughs (Laura Linney), O'Neill is initially told only that the sting is an investigation of Hanssen's sexual habits. He is soon drawn in by the devout Catholic’s knowledge and experience. Hanssen, a member of the strict Opus Dei cult, starts to ingratiate himself and his family into Eric’s life, as well, causing a great deal of strain between him and his lapsed-protestant East German wife.

Chris Cooper is elegantly creepy as Hanssen, the man whose wife (Kathleen Quinlan as Bonnie Hanssen) prays on her knees before bedtime, where her husband secretly films her having sex and trades the films on the internet. Phillipe is particularly good as the idealistic O’Neill. His journey through the film, from complete faith the direction his life is headed, to questioning everything he believes, is fascinating to watch. As he grapples with his feeling for a man he can’t seem to decide whether to admire or despise, O’Neill is forced to make choices he finds difficult, even repellent, all the while trying to keep his cool and not give the game away. Equally convincing is Linney, jaded and alone, who seems weighed down by the knowledge that one of the Agency’s best and brightest has turned out to be a traitor.

This is a taut, intriguing thriller, made all the more frightening by the fact that it actually happened. Written and directed by Billy Ray (Flightplan, Shattered Glass), the tension builds gradually, but relentlessly, and it's only knowing that they did actually catch Hanssen that stops you chewing your fingernails down to the bone.
