On the subject of "how dare you end your book like that" emails...I've had a run of emails lately from readers who have requested, in the nicest way possible way, that I go back and write sequels to both the Tide Lords and the Demon Child series, not so much becasue they want more, but because they don't like the endings. In short, they'd like a sequel that will redress the mistakes I obviously made by either not finishing the book in the way they liked, or by not having characters they believed should hook up, hooking up, and that a sequel will give me an opportunity to set the record straight. I am bemused by these requests. I often wonder what goes through the mind of the reader who sits down to compose such a letter. Does their internal dialogue go something like this?
Yup... I figure that's how it goes. So I am going to drop everything, and write a sequel to both series which ends the way these fans want them to... Only problem I have, is that I have about 10 emails offering about 10 different endings. Oh no! Which one is right? Here's a wild suggestion... maybe the one I wrote in the first place that passed the scrutiny of my agents, multiple editors around the world and the several hundred thousand people who read the book and don't think I need to change a thing. Just a thought:) On the upside, I think, as authors go, I'm probably lucky. I think Trudi Canavan's "how dare you end your Black Magician series like that?" emails run into the thousands...LOL

The only thought going through my head at the moment? "How dare they tell my favourite author that she (of all people?!) got it wrong?"
This entry is awesome. You told your readers what your thought, but gently and with humour. It must be... well, annoying and almost insulting for someone to tell you that you wrote your own world/characters/CREATION wrong. You did well here :) But maybe you should have ended it with- *runs away giggling*
Would it be too much to ask these people to use their imagination and pretend that what they wanted to happen did.
/sign to the posters before. I don't think I ever was unhappy with a ending, but I really do like to re-write storys myself, just in my head to see how the characters react and stuff.
But but *sigh* it's not their world...its them experiencing the this foreign place through someone else's eyes! argg silly deluded peoples *rolls eyes*
btw I almost cried with the ending you gave Wrayan & Kalan (my fave pairing)in Warlord. Not what I expected but it made me love the individual characters more for their honesty...oh gosh darnit I was already in love with Wrayan anyway LOL
Awesome, Jenny, hilarious!
Perhaps these people where simply joking and they forgot to send the mails on April 1st........... or perhaps not, lol.
Probably it was only for your amusement.
I never get why people do that... I mean, just be happy that the author created the world and managed to publish it so you as a reader can enjoy it?!
To be honest I was a bit disappointed with the ending of the Tide Lords - however, that doesn't mean I would like it changed! Because the way it's been written is the way it ended. That's just the reality in that 'world'... same as in our own reality, you can be happy or unhappy with a result but it's just the way it is, in the end. In fact, I don't admire authors who change things because of their readers*. So go Jenny! (* Everyone changes things for their readers at one point or another, what I'm really trying to say is authors who decide to let character A hook up with a random character just because they got 320752 e-mails from fans saying that it must. be. like. that., but it just doesn't work out for the story or the characters just shouldn't be together at all... things like that. That's not good. That really makes original fiction into some strange kind of fanfiction, only not by the fans but for the fans...)
That last line has me wondering what would have happened to Reithen if he'd known Sonea instead of Tia ... hehehe.
I can't believe some people would be silly enough to send emails like that. (actually on second thought I can believe it ... there's all kinds out there) But anyone who demands you change your ending because you got it wrong *obviously* hasn't understood your stories properly. There might not be certain warm and fuzzy endings/pairing that some fans always seem to want, but every ending you've written works perfectly for that story. :)
I am so very glad you are not one of those authors who think too much about catering to the whims of certain fans (often the loud but the few) and write stuff into your books to keep them happy at the cost of the integrity of the story itself. *cough*HarryPotterEpilogue*cough*
Sue, I've always said Jenny writes solidly satisfying endings.
Lol. Honestly, I kind of wanted to go to Supanova just to ask you about your decision on ending the series... But not with the intention of attempting to get you to change it. That would be stupid. It's your series and you've ended it how you see fit, and though I was frustrated by the end of the Tide Lords, it was a fantastic read, and I totally appreciate the effort and creativity that goes into a series like that. I just like getting into discussions like that. ^^
As for the Demon Child Trilogy, I don't see how anyone could complain about that ending. It was brilliant, and I can't see it ending any other way without being diminished somehow.
I don't mind "why did you end it like that?" but "how dare you?", "you need to fix this" or"we need another book with an ending the readers deserve" are the ones that crack me up:)
dare i suggest, those people can always go and write their own book...
but that takes time, and effort, and some uber empathic skill, and the talent to make it all flow, and...oh gosh, more time & more effort LOL
Redirect them to a fan fic site and tell them to get cracking. Just in case you are thinking about a rewrite, I have always thought the Lord of Tides could do with more unicorns (and maybe a vampire hobbit).
Loved the way you finished the books but would love a new series as wll
