The SFX site has a really interesting blog entry up today about prequels and how bad they can be.

I have to say, I generally agree with that sentiment, even though I've written a prequel series.

The SFX blogger, Steven Gaythorpe, remarks:

In my opinion prequels are worse than sequels because they pervert the narrative journey of a character. The narrative journey is how characters get from the beginning of their story to the end. When you create a story you are supposed to select the most significant and interesting event in a characters life and write about that. So a prequel is just a story the writer didn’t think was interesting enough tell the first time.

This is so true and the reason I picked different main characters for the Wolfblade trilogy to those in the Demon Child trilogy. R'shiel and Tarja's story was told. I could play in the same world, but I had to find some new playmates for the story to have any legs at all.

I probably won't write another prequel series*. The last one just about made my head explode. Besides, having your ending predetermined makes it difficult to sustain the tension of the narrative. In the same way that flashbacks mean you know the characters in peril are going to survive, prequels have an assumed sense of security about them which makes it hard to rattle the reader.

There is a reason, you know (other than me being a wannabe serial killer) that so many peripheral characters who seem important, meet grisly ends in the Wolfblade trilogy.

I had to do something to keep you on your toes... hehehe

I tend to agree with your point about already knowing how the story ended. I recently re-read Dracula, and although I was a little impressed that Stoker managed to write an entire novel in the letter/journal format, it bugged me that you always knew the character HAD to have survived to write the letter/journal afterwards!

I think I've said it here before, the worst kind of prequels are the ones that the author never meant to write before his/her earlier, series became a hit. All of a sudden you get a story that feels like it's been squeezed out, for not so good reasons, rather than it coming naturally. The main problem with that though is that there's pressure for the author to capture the same kind of feeling of the characters and world, the reader has come to expect now. I've read a few prequels that failed to capture the magic and feeling of the first series.

Having said that, it can be done, quite well.

I really, REALLY enjoyed Hythrun Chronicles. It expanded a world I already loved, and there were many things that weren't looked into in Demon Child, snippets that left you wanting to know how certain events happened and how certain characters got their start. I remember hearing that Wolfblade would be about Marla, and that instantly got me interested, because we only got a brief glimpse of her in DC. (One of my all time favourite characters of yours by the way.)

I would agree that Hythrun Chronicles worked well because the main characters were less known, but ultimately important in affecting the events that later take place in DC.

I understand you felt, probably a little (okay, maybe a lot) restricted, Jenny, when you wrote it, but I found the series just as enjoyable and just as fraught with danger/ intrigue/ suspense, etc as Demon Child. Everything I'd come to expect from you was there, only I had new characters to play with. Very fun.

So, in summing that up, I think if the idea is there, and you want to write it because you, FEEL like it needs to be written, don't let anything stop you. These are rather large worlds of yours, with a lot of different people occupying them. I say there is potential for another trip to Hythria/ Medalon/ Ranadon. (And I'm crossing my fingers, just so you know, something will happen there.)

Otherwise, you might just have to come up with some sort of codex to appease the more crazed and demanding fans. Ha ha.

Even though there was a disturbingly small amount of Adrina, I LOVED the Hythrun Chronicles. They were far enough removed from DC that I was on my toes the whole time. Now it's time for a DC sequel series. ;)
