Thursday"s Movie Review - Get SmartSaw Get Smart last night. Big nostalgia fix. I was soooo going to grow up and be 99 when I was a child. Thought the movie was, well, pretty ordinary... I loved The Rock, though. He made it worth watching. Here's the review: Yet another remake, yet another blockbuster. Yet another movie where the idea is there but something is missing that made the original so much fun. In this update of the 1960s Mel Brooks spy spoof, Steve Carell replaces Don Adams as the bumbling CONTROL agent, Maxwell Smart. Ann Hathaway takes on the Barbara Feldon role of 99 and Alan Arkin does a credible job as The Chief. All the iconic sayings have been worked in, although Carell gives us a much more earnest and less confident Max. 99, on the other hand, has had extensive plastic surgery, is supremely smart and is carrying a whole lot of baggage from a previous failed relationship. The plot of the movie isn’t that important, except that it follows the typical CONTROL versus CHAOS bad guys. Terrence Stamp is Siegfried,(but not nearly as much fun as the original), surrounded by minions that are so stereotypical it’s almost painful to watch them. There are plenty of laughs, but most of them are the same laughs from the original series, not because of anything new brought to the film by the new writers (except possibly the scene where the President, in a time of national crisis, is seen reading a book to small children in a classroom). What makes the show, is the supporting character. The nerds are fun, David Koechner as Larabie is a hoot, but the film belongs to Dwayne Johnson (aka The Rock) as Agent 23. He stole the screen every scene he was in, and seemed to be the only one having a good time with his role, which is a sense you always got from the original TV series. All in all, Get Smart has some laughs, some great stunts and enough silliness to warrant being called a spoof, but in the end, I think the original TV series will stand the test of time much better than the remake.
Comments
i havnt seen the movie yet, but my besties and i are going to watch it in the school holies.
i love the original series- i watch it with my dad on foxtel. i'll just have to watch the movie. Mel brooks rocks!
Went and saw this the other night, with hubby.
Being a little too young to really know the orignal, I loved it... Loved Steve Carell (ever since he was Brick in Anchorman), loved 'The Rock' (he's a better actor now than when he was wrestling)... Didn't think much of Anne Hathaway (don't know why)... And I was disappointed that there was only one 'disguise'. There should have been a few more :( Even though it did lack a little in the plot department, definately one to see.
I saw the movie last weekend and I loved it,the characters were funny and the movie does not have any boring part and the argument is really good, I could not stop laughing, the movie was more than I expected it. My favorite characters were 86 (of course), 99 (I loved her bags) and, 23 (obviously).
I thought that it was another bad film but it is not!
