Shock! Horror!SFX Magazine is currently running a poll of their readers to determine the favourite sci-fi and fantasy authors of all time. The votes, thus far, are fairly predictable (I mean, what list would be complete without Tolkien, Heinlein, Asimov and Clarke on it?), but shock! horror! there are hardly any women getting votes and none from the Great Land of Oz, as far as I could see. I am shocked! I mean, Trudi Canavan, for one, is huge in the UK. Like, monstrously, bestsellingly*, huge! Yet, nary a whisper about her on the list. Where are her legion of squee-ing fans? All the ones who email her every day (several times a day) asking her why she had kill off a certain character in the Black Magician Trilogy... We must redress this ghastly oversight, post haste! Time to get your votes in, kiddies, and get the girls from Down Under represented! Your mission, should you chose to accept it, is to go to the SFX website. Click here to vote in the comments section of their blog, then post the following list. Unfortunately, you're only allowed 5 votes, but feel free to shuffle them around as you see fit. And remember my mantra... the cornerstone of democracy... Vote early, vote often. LOL Here's my list (inspired by nothing more that patriotism. really, it is...:)
Other contenders: Fiona McIntosh, Kylie Chan, Pamela Freeman, Marianne de Pierres, Tracy Harding, Cecilia Dart-Thornton, Karen Miller, Jennifer Fallon...oh, look at that... someone put my name on the list already. Fancy that:) * Yeah... yeah... not a word... I know

Done and done. I'm just amazed there are so few female authors on the list at all, from Australia or not. Why is this when every time I walk into the fantasy section at Dymocks, female names jump out at me from everywhere?
My list was 1. Jennifer Fallon 2. Juliet Marillier 3. Terry Pratchett 4. Robin Hobb 5. Cecilia Dart-Thornton I was debating Sara Douglass, actually. She's a funny one to me - one of her series is a much loved favourite, and the others I could barely drag myself through. Thanks for pointing this out!
Sara Douglass was the first Australian author that I read...loved her Axis Trilogy, but her other books...meh.
Well We'll put it to you this way you were number one our list!
And *tears* despite the fact supanova in Sydney is only like nine weeks away we now cannot afford to go..... :'( (I was crushed when mum (and Clair's 2nd mum) broke the news to us we were crushed, even the fact we both have our own jobs wont help us here)....so if you have a book signing for the next book in the Tide Lord series we are....(drum roll please) going to either fly or drive down to Alice from Darwin just for you!!!! well it's more for us but we get to meet you!!! YEY!!! What pmore could you want in fans?
1. Jennifer Fallon
2. Patricia Briggs 3. Anne Bishop 4. Trudi Canavan 5. Sara Douglass runners up would be Mercedes Lackey, Anne McCaffrey, and Morgen Howell. I totally forgot that David Eddings did start me really in fantasy and got me with my husband all those years ago. And Fiona McIntosh, Karren Miller, Naomi Novik, JK Rowling, Robin Hobb, Carol Berg, and Jim Butcher all deservse(sp?) to be on the list as well. Laters Kristen
Yep, have to agree with that list, don't I? *rushes off to vote...*
1. Jennifer Fallon
2. J.R.R. Tolkien 3. Elizabeth Haydon 4. Ursula K. LeGuin 5. Patricia A. McKillip The first three were easy, [:D] but the last two can be changed around. I just couldn't think of any others (that's 12 am for you).
Can't wait to see who the final 50 are! Of course, I voted for you :) Also Sara Douglass, George RR Martin, Jacqueline Carrey, & Trudi Canavan
I just had a look at the lists...Jenny is looking good!
1. Jenny ;) (I'll bet that one was obvious)
2. GRRM 3. Robin Hobb 4. David Gemmell 5. Philip Pullman Just looking at the votes, a lot of people seem to be all for the classics, but I prefer more modern books as my favourites of all time. Classics are usually only about a once-every-five-years read for me, compared to my top five which barely collect dust on my shelves. More substance, less singing elves! :P
Seems like this post made a different.
The list of authors voted for gets more interesting towards the end :)
These were my votes..
1. George R.R. Martin (A Song of Ice and Fire) 2. Robin Hobb (Farseer, Tawny Man, Soldier Son) 3. Jennifer Fallon (Second Sons) 4. Patrick Rothfuss (Kingkiller Chronicle) 5. Robert Jordan (Wheel of Time) *ehem* am I the only one that didn't put Jenny first? Oh well. 1 aussie, 4 americans. 2 women, 3 men. That's a decent balance, I think.
