When we were writing Roswell, Sonny Whitelaw and I had more than one discussion about how much detail we should include regarding the construction of the Fat Boy and Little Boy atom bombs, and other nuclear weapons circa 1947. You see, we're contractually bound not to include the instructions for anything that-even indirectly-could cause a person or persons harm.  MGM doesn't have much of a sense of humour about these things, apparently:)

I always argued that it didn't apply to nuclear weapons, because even if we included actual instructions, where would you get the uranium?

Well, it seems the answer is Amazon.

That's right, folks, you can buy uranium ore on Amazon.

Sonny found this yesterday and emailed the link to me. Of course, this begs the question: what was she doing looking for uranium on Amazon in the first place, but perhaps we're better off not knowing.

Don't panic people, U-238 is not the really scary stuff, that would be U-235 which is what they use in the big bombs!!!

we have radioactive material at school in the science lab. not enough to blow anything up or even do serious damage with their little alpha, beta and gamma rays but still.....

Actually, they use both U-238 and U-235 in reactors. The 235 is to get the initial chain reaction going. Also, 238 is the more common form (by quite a lot).
